A VIEW TO THE FUTURE

Melbourne’s west is a rapidly growing melting pot of industry, diversity, cultures, and traditions and is expected to reach a population to rival Adelaide by 2036. With Sunshine at the epicentre of such profound growth, Mayor Georgina Papafotiou has defined the suburb as being on track to emerge as the capital of the west by 2050. Much as the kiln transforms the properties of clay, Sunshine is embracing its malleable ability to reinvent itself and is settling into strong foundations that will ultimately support its final form.

Already supporting enviable proximity to transport, commercial enterprise and essential community infrastructure, Sunshine will soon be recognised as a true future city. Placed at the centre of the Airport Rail Link, which will soon connect the CBD to Tullamarine, and the Suburban Rail Link which will connect the west to Melbourne’s north and east, Sunshine is steeping into a new identity shaped by both its industrious past and profound future potential. The strategic and enviable access these rail links will provide to healthcare, educational facilities and government infrastructure will support large employment growth and nurture an already booming growth corridor.

Sunshine has been crafted by industry yet its future is multi-faceted. Plans for a new sports stadium and a secondary home for the National Gallery of Victoria have been mapped out in the West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance which harasses a vision to invigorate the area and pave the way for highly aspirational liveability.

Sunshine presents a beautiful porcelain exterior to the world supported by durable foundations.

AN UNPOLISHED GEM: PROUD, WELCOMING AND DIVERSE

A little gritty and bursting with authenticity, it’s a suburb that celebrates its roots. It’s precisely this unpolished vibe that gives Sunshine its charm. It’s got soul. It has a distinct local history that sheds light on Melbourne’s industrial heritage and the waves of post-war migration that shaped Australia. Like its working-class cousins, Collingwood and Cremorne, it’s as honest as they come and has a story to tell.

FIRST ESTABLISHED 1920

In 1920 the Drayton Brothers established Sunshine Potteries at 99 Derby Road, Sunshine. Largely responsible for Sunshine’s industrial heritage, the scale of production forged a sizeable place in the landscape with many workers and their families housed nearby.

Post-war Australia saw a huge decrease in the general population and large demand for porcelain insulators. This meant that Sunshine Potteries was the only producer of high quality, high demand insulators but couldn’t facilitate the demand due to a lack of manpower. A scheme was devised to provide housing on Drayton Brothers’ land to skilled migrant workers flooding into Australia at the time.

The housing was to be an elevated offering in comparison to the rather primitive conditions of nearby workers hostel accommodation, and help integrate Baltic migrants into the fabric of the Australian way of life. And so a community was born. A community largely influenced by the Drayton Brothers and their ambitious vision for their company and the future of their country. They established a precedent that would come to have a far reaching influence on living standards and urban development for many years to come.

Today, Clayworks has been built in the ghostly impression of the community that once occupied this site. Proudly reflecting the story of Sunshine Potteries, the masterplan for this new community, anchored by its remarkable history and enriched by an intent to continue the legacy of the Drayton Brothers, is redefining what it means to reside in the west today and into its bright future.
